The
Taklamakan covers an area of 350.000 sqkm. It is surrounded
by the worlds highest mountains. In the north by the
Tienshan Mountains, in the east by the Karakorum and
the Pamir and in the south by the Himalaya. From these
mountains, rivers reach into the outer regions of the
desert creating oasis. Along those green islands, the
caravanes of the ancient silk-route, used to travel,
creating many cultural and economic centers of life,
like the oasis Kashgar.
Today,
the taklamakan desert belongs to the PRChina and is
used for prison camps and as a nuclear test site.
